With the slow death of newspapers and magazines in favor of new media, the loss of revenue from classifieds has been a tough reality for printed paper.
Paid ads have been a constant source of revenue for small and big newspapers until some years ago. Or, more precisely, before the Internet. The explosion of Internet penetration brought a huge number of alternatives for those who want to buy or sell second hand.
Some weeks ago the Norwegian media giant Schibsted entered the Indian market with Sahipasand, an Indian version of their free classified ads model. Sahipasand is based upon the Swedish Blocket and belongs to a network made of more than twenty sites in as many different countries.

Considering the number of competing sites in this sector I was expecting to see the standard model (let’s call it “the Craigslist model”). Instead, what Shaipasand offers is a very clean and stramlined experience.
From the homepage the user is prompted to choose a region. This is a pretty strong difference compared to most other classified sites, where category has the priority. From this very first approach, Sahipasand shows its interest in focusing exchanges on the local level.
After the user has choosen a region, is possible to see all the most recent ads in that region. The number of ads is remarkable, especially considering how young the site is. From houses to cars and jobs, the categories are limited in number but cover most merchandise. In order to keep a family feeling to the site, there are no personal or dating ads.
Inserting an ad is also very simple and just requires filling a form (with no registration required). The system used by Sahipasand represents a rethinking of the traditional model of free ads sites and it will be interesting to see how they will do in a relatively young but competitive market such as India.
